Any sound that is undesirable like beating of the drums, motorcycles passing on the street or even the barking of the dogs can be referred to as noise. Too much displeasing sounds made by humans, machines and animals that can disturb the balance in the surrounding is called noise pollution. Too much noise is not just annoying, but it can also be detrimental to the health.
Sound is measured in decibels (dB). Every 10dB increase in a certain sound means at there is ten times increase in the intensity of the sound. Sound measuring 120dB can damage the eardrums. However, sound that is about 85dB can already be hazardous to the ears if the person is exposed to it continuously. Constant exposure to such intense sound can bring health problems like damaged eardrums.
There are two main sources of noise pollution, namely: indoor and outdoor sources. Loud music and noise made by some electrical appliances belong to indoor source and noise from vehicles and industrial machines are under the outdoor source. Studies shows that outdoor source contribute geluidsmeting laten uitvoeren more to this kind of pollution compared to indoor source, that is why urban places have higher noise pollution compared to rural places.
A person exposed to high decibel sounds constantly has greater risks of developing health problems. One of these health risks is developing an acoustic trauma. This happens, when a person is exposed constantly to a sound of 85dB and above. Constant exposure to too much noise can bring physical and psychological problems.
People exposed to too much noise can develop difficulty in hearing, hypertension and disturbed sleep. A person and even animals living in a noise polluted area can also acquire stress and become aggressive and irritable due to noise pollution.
Laws regulating the noise have been created. Some places created laws completely prohibiting noise and some places only prohibit noise during certain time of the day i.e. 10pm to 7am. United States noises are monitored under Noise Control Act 1972.
The above mentioned are just few of the many noise pollution information. People perform a great role in controlling this. It is our responsibility to not make too much noise that can be harmful to other human beings.
